About Lim Shin

Shin grew up in an environment valuing the blessings of having food and clean water. Her father has been a humble cook and chef and also a gardener for decades, unconsciously cultivating the family's sensitivities since childhood regarding food and vegetation. She has helped in food tasting, degustation and deconstruction in an Asian restaurant chain's efforts to improve their menu and flavours.

As she decided to adopt a plant-based diet due to the Dharma's influence on her, Compassion has been the guiding direction in her meals - meditation in food preparation results in loving and compassionate meals produced, with a harmony from nature.

Should one require categorisation, temple food can be mainly classified as Asian or Korean temple food or Shojin Ryori in Japanese, or food without the five pungent vegetables. When not at the stove, her family members take turns to prepare meals. Currently, her sister helms the home kitchen and whips up vegan meals. Natural plant-based meals can be heartwarming and satisfying, while providing the needed energy for Life and is light for the body. Shin has a small home garden along her family apartment's corridor where some vegetables and herbs are grown together in a shared space with her Dad's decorative plants and with her neighbours. Shin shares about Temple Food cooking (fully plant-based) and culinary art, together with the nuances of intuitive cooking with her sister. She believes that meal preparation is an activity born out of an individual's blessings. For one to start realising the blessings of being able to take care of a loved one and express love through food and action, the values of purity, simplicity, sincerity, practicality and harmony through food preparation or any expression of love for the recipient are essential.

Shin also shares about Herbs and Tea Preparation together with Temple Food Cooking at the Instagram handle @limsvegankitchenfocusing on the quiet practice of growing one's own herbs, the drying, storing and drinking of tea leaves from the garden.

Shin is a hobby painter, with a preference for oil paints. Showing a penchant for drawing and perceiving colours, shades and shapes in her surroundings when she was 3 years old, her art teacher aunt brought her to her art classes. She attended group classes with her aunt for a few years until she sent her to her mentor, an art teacher for youths of 40 years, to learn. Shin studied art continuously for 9 years, exploring various mediums including poster, oil pastels, pencil and graphite sketching, Chinese calligraphy and Chinese ink painting, receiving an award for 5 collective paintings in her 'Young Artist' days until she took a break at age 11 to focus on her primary school leaving examinations in the rigorous education system in Singapore. She continued part-time art studies in secondary school for 2 more years, exploring acrylic and watercolour before taking her longest break, when her art took a standstill. Shin resumed her art interest in adulthood and studied for a short period with an American portrait and realist painter in fine arts, and also with the Lasalle College of the Arts in Oil Painting while concurrently exploring freely on her own. Shin may place a few of her humble paintings and art for purchase occasionally, with 100% of profits going to the specified charity organisations. Completed paintings will be available under the "Shop" tab and can also be viewed on her virtual Art space at the Instagram handle @shinah_art__. Commissioned paintings are possible. She enjoys painting nature landscapes.
